Matthew Laughing Bear Scott Schipper Shipquist - "bear"
born April 29th, 1969 Minneapolis, MN

Networking with a diverse group of artists and musicians to help bring original, authentic, hand crafted music straight from the heart. As a touring performer going by the name Bear's Acoustic Honey bear writes, arranges, sings, and plays a unique and original hybrid style of acoustic lead guitar. Going the distance between a intimate coffee house seting to full on rock show! He is a solo singer songwriter or one man psychedelic Jam Band. Either the headliner himself or an opener for a touring national act. He matches the energy of the venue and the crowd and tunes into the energy of whoever he is playing for and makes it work like a swiss watch! Playing to Thousands at summer music festivals or at the local small town bar it's all good! He straps on the harmonica holder and blows some harp. Using a boss loop station and some effect pedals to create a full, lush, rich, danceable and always enjoyable musical experience. Bear is also the impetus behind The Bear Clan Music Cooperative which is a full service production, booking, recording and indie music artist support cooperative that supports many charities - primarily dealing with supporting the arts for children, resources for the financially disadvantaged, people affected by addiction and alcoholism and environmental sustainability and awareness.

"I have always had music in my life and it has been my passion for as long as I can remember. I took piano and violin lessons for some years but that really never fit. I tried a ukulele and that wasn’t quite right either. So, in the 3rd grade the guitar entered my life. I think I played it for two years before I could get anything that resembling music to escape the wood and strings. I started forming bands in junior high school and spent the next ten years playing in different bands, each with their own unique sound. I spent most of the 90's out in Seattle and in the Pacific NW. Through all of this I have fought a life long battle with Drugs and Alcoholism... It has kicked my ass and almost killed me. It certainly kept me from making and enjoying the music that has always been in my soul. It has kept me from being the father, friend, and lover that I know in my heart. Now, here I am, with a huge helping of life experience - heartbreaks, joys, highs and lows. I am ready to have all of that emotion and experience come out in my music. I want to bring my life to you in song and let you do with it, what you want. My music comes from my heart and soul. I have relearned that the music in my heart is full of hope and love... music is magic and it can heal and fill your spirit".

"I have been influenced by so many artists and poets and musicians from so many different genres and eras. I have found that the most important thing is the joy and pure expression of live music performed by artists who attempt to lay aside their ego's and bring love, joy, hope and some tears to our beautiful human family. We are in such dire need of healing and a healthy positive vision of a future created together based on love and respect for all people regardless of race, gender, religious beliefs and cultural traditions. I always try to let my heart vibrate with a deep true love that I can embrace fully in my spirit. I try to remain authentic in my soul's vision. I am in the midsummer season of a lifelong journey towards becoming a man who lives with honor, integrity, respect, compassion and empathy. In the sunshine of my life, with faith that grace will provide a bountiful harvest in due time... in due time... far on the shimmering horizon. But it is the journey not the destination that fuels and sweetens my stride through life and love".

"To be a loving father, a loyal and supportive friend. To be a soulful spirit; grateful and loving full of respect and sensual fire, a truly equal and inspiring companion. To be a musician and artist who performs with honesty, courage and emotional intensity. To give before taking... to love and be of service. This is my life goal and vision".

This last Summer bear was selected from a pool of hundreds of regional artists to be one of the Twenty-five songwriters who took part in the 2006 Highway 61 Singer/Songwriter Contest. The judges based their scores on the following categories: Creativity, Performance, Lyrical Content, Instrumental Ability, Listenability, and Northern Minnesota/Rural Appeal. Bear's song Wheels of Summer was selected to be included on the limited edition CD which you can get from bear.
